Don't expose your assets to the elements

A corrugated iron roof that's well maintained will last a lifetime. But neglect it and you could soon be facing a number of problems.  Damage caused by roofs lifting (and in some cases completely disappearing) off farm buildings during storms is costly and often avoidable.

A longstanding FMG client found this out halfway through last year. Checking roofing integrity was part of the regular housekeeping schedule, but when a winter storm came through earlier then expected he was left to collect roofing from his neighbours property, some three kilometres away.  The missing roof led to damage to feed, and a whole heap of extra hours making good.

Because the client was insured under FMGs’ RuralPak Farm Buildings and Farm Contents cover, they were able to repair the roof and restock damaged feed without anyone going hungry.

How can you avoid the same loss?

  •  Regularly check that your hay, machinery and implement shed roofs are securely  fastened with Z nails, and replace any missing or loose nails right away.
  •  Think about the three pressures on your roof when planning a maintenance program: Dead load; the weight of the roofing material and structure it is attached to. Live load: either people, rain, or snow and wind uplift
  •  If your property is above the snowline, consider installing snow straps to protect guttering.

Make sure your insurance policy is able to cover:

  •  At least the present day value of your building and contents
  •  Any reasonable additional costs you incur to keep your farm running
  •  The repair and replacement of your farm fences if lost to a storm or flood
