Keep hold of your keys; keep hold of your ute
Having your keys in plain view is the best way to loose your vehicle. We know, because our claims records show that last year FMG paid out more than half a million dollars for farm vehicle thefts, often with the thief just collecting the keys and driving away.
Unfortunately it's a story we're all familiar with. Labeled keys are left on a hook in the shed so that everyone knows where to find them. When it’s time to head off, both the keys and the vehicle are gone. It’s a long and frustrating walk home and one that can easily be prevented.
How can you avoid the same loss?
- Keep your keys on you during the day, and lock them away at night. Most thefts are opportunistic, the easier it is to take, the more likely it will be.
- Ensure vehicles are securely locked when not in use, you may only be away for five minutes but that's all it takes.
- Make yourself known to any visitors on the property.
Make sure your insurance policy is able to cover:
- Your farm vehicle for theft or accidental loss
- Any reasonable costs you incur to recover a stolen, converted or lost farm vehicle
- Replacing locks and or keys
