Avoid your boots giving you the slip

New Zealand’s farming industry accounts for most of the new injury claims received by ACC.  In fact, slips, trips and falls on New Zealand dairy farms cost them around $1.2 million annually. And one of the most common claims is for foot slip events in the milking shed.

Autumn saw an FMG client rushing to make time on the early shift before breakfast.  Moving from the paddock to the shed his gumboots slipped on the mucky floor and he landed heavily on his knee.  Trying to get up, it was clear that something was seriously damaged.  Six months later and returning to full time work was still out of the question.

Fortunately he had the FMG Disability Assistance policy which provided him with a weekly benefit whilst he got back on his feet.

How can you avoid the same loss?

  • Choose boots with the right tread design for your shed’s surfaces, and replace them before the tread wears out, means less chance of serious personal injury.
  • Avoid rushing and pay attention to where your feet are, surfaces get covered with hazards quickly around the shed, taking your time will save you a lot of bother.
  • Check plant and equipment design for factors (e.g. steps built with inconsistent geometry of risers and/or tread depth).

Make sure your insurance policy is able to cover:

  • Benefit payments if you suffer an accident or sickness that causes you to become disabled.
  • You whilst taking part in occasional off-site farm contracting work.
  • Subsequent disability cover if you suffer a recurrence of an accident or illness within two years of the previous accident or illness.
  • The option of receiving a weekly benefit for five years or a lump sum benefit
