Farm Fire Safety

The need to take precautions against the ignition and spread of fire is very real – even in winter. Fire permits are free; the cost of a fire getting out of control can be substantial. Here are some simple precautions you can take to reduce the risk of burn-offs and other fires igniting or getting out of control:

Checking and rechecking that fires supposedly put out have not re-ignited
Having adequate fire extinguishers in buildings and vehicles, and adequate water supplies
Allowing for smoke alarms, meter board and electrical wiring checks
Checking for birds nesting in vehicles before starting the engine
Incorporating cut-out switches in pump sheds and vehicles
Storing hazardous goods in an appropriate area away from other at-risk items
Always ensuring you have obtained the relevant permits before starting a fire
Ensuring you have appropriate fire suppression and public liability insurance, including Forest and Rural Fires Act cover
