Agricultural Scholarship Recipients Announced

Nathan Nelson from Pukekohe and Erin Sinclair from South Canterbury are this year’s recipients of the FMG Agricultural Scholarships. The scholarship program was launched in 2005 to celebrate FMG’s centenary and gives two New Zealand students the opportunity to study a tertiary qualification in agriculture.

FMG is New Zealand’s leading rural insurance and finance company and has been a supporter of the rural sector for over 100 years.  “We are committed to the rural sector and we see education as critical in the continuing development of the industry,” said Gordon Smith, Chief Executive of FMG.

Entrants had to submit a 1,000 word-essay entitled “Why I have chosen agriculture as a career” along with a profile introducing themselves, their personal interests and their achievements.

Nathan, who will be studying for a Bachelor in Applied Science in Agriculture at Massey University, demonstrated a passion for agriculture in his application, as well as an astute interest in environmental issues surrounding farming and the future of agriculture in New Zealand.

Nathan was excited to receive the news he had been successful.  He is passionate about agriculture and is looking forward to beginning his studies and the challenges that lie ahead. Once qualified, Nathan’s long term goal is to work closely with dairy farmers as an environmental consultant to enable farmers to care take of the land for future use in a sustainable manner.

Erin’s submission showed she has a keen interest in dairy farming research around on-farm management, including pasture growth and management, genetics and environmental management. She also demonstrates an astute understanding of the ongoing challenges facing the industry, citing a skilled labour shortage and environmental sustainability as the two of the major issues.

Erin was also excited to find out she was a recipient, and can’t wait to start university and become involved in innovative research that has the potential to impact the development of dairy farming methods. Erin will be studying Agriculture Science at Lincoln University.
