There's nothing smarter than protecting yourself against skin cancer
Skin cancer is one of this country’s greatest killers; it affects over 300 kiwis each year and New Zealand has one of the highest melanoma death rates in the world. Farmers are particularly at risk, as they spend many hours out in the sun each day regardless of the season.
FMG recognises the need to educate both young and old about the damage caused by the sun. That’s why we are proud to be a major supporter of the Great Country Cover Up campaign. Joining forces with the New Zealand Cancer Society and other well-known rural sector businesses, FMG will be out and about this summer providing sunscreen, floppy hats and advice on how to limit your exposure and proactively protect yourself from the sun.
At FMG we're strong believers in the prevention of skin cancer. The vast majority of skin cancers are preventable; it is estimated that over 90% of melanomas in Australasia are attributable to sunlight exposure (Sun Smart, 2007). Simply by making a small effort to protect your skin during the hottest parts of the day, you can save yourself a whole lot trouble.
FMG is committed to supporting the rural community as we have done for over 100 years, and we reckon that preventing skin cancer is a whole better then facing it - so remember to make sunscreen, a hat and sunnies a must when you’re out in the sun.
