FMG Agriculture Scholarship recipients announced
 |
In its third year, FMG's annual Agricultural Scholarship programme, which provides financial support to two students, has had another excellent turn-out with applications coming in from students all over the country. Applications were of an extremely high standard this year, which made it difficult to choose the two most deserving recipients.
Alice Speedy of Dannevirke and Justin Davie of Gore are the two FMG Agricultural Scholarship winners for 2008. Both Alice and Justin have strong rural backgrounds which have fostered their love of the land and their interest in agriculture as a career. |
Alice grew up on a mixed farm near Dannevirke where she became interested in the cattle industry from a young age. Through her school years at Iona College, she supplemented the core curriculum with rural and agriculture studies by engaging in a distance learning agriculture course through Telford Polytechnic. She also showed her commitment to the community with time spent as the secretary of the local Wainui Dog Trial Club. Alice has a great love of the Hereford breed which she attributes to her grandfather who ran a successful Hereford farm. Alice intends to study a Bachelor of Agricultural Science at Lincoln University with hopes of addressing issues critical to the survival of the agriculture industry in New Zealand, namely climate change.
Justin spent his childhood working on the family farm, using his surroundings to further his knowledge and interest for the land and the animals and machines that cultivate the land. With a passion for the advancement of farming practice, Justin is a firm proponent of the 'number 8 wire' attitude and believes that innovation is a requirement of successful farming. Justin also intends to head to Lincoln University, and on completing his Bachelor of Agriculture, plans to gain experience working on a crop farm while continuing his passion for soil science and alternate growing methods.
FMG congratulates both Alice and Justin on their achievements and wishes them all the best for their time at university. We look forward to hearing about their studies.
