Covers you and your family’s personal contents at home and while you’re out and about.

What we cover

The FMG Household Contents policy automatically includes these covers and benefits. 

Covers your contents if they are damaged or destroyed by a sudden, unintended and unforeseen event, or if they’re stolen.  

Up to $1,000,000 cover for your legal liability if you accidentally damage someone else’s property, or injure someone. 

Cover up to $5,000 if you die or are permanently injured as a result of a fire or an intruder to the house.

We’ll pay up to $5,000 for accidental loss to your employees’ personal belonging if they’re not insured anywhere else, and the loss was connected with their employment. Cover doesn’t include their tools.

You’re covered for accidental loss of gifts you or your family have bought for someone while they’re temporarily stored at your house.

We will review your sum insured amount at renewal and may make an adjustment for inflation if its needed.

If your keys are lost or stolen we’ll pay to replace them and you won’t need to pay an excess. This also covers devices you use to enter your property like electronic access cards and remote door openers.

We’ll pay up to $1,000 for the accidental loss of any goods you have bought through the Internet if you can’t recover the costs anywhere else.

Cover for accidental loss of your contents while they are being permanantly removed from your house to another location for loss caused by fire, theft or collision involving the means of conveyance.

Cover for accidental loss up to $5,000, however there is no cover for the drone/model aircraft whilst in use.

Cover up to $5,000 towards the cost of refilling your fire fighting equipment after it’s been used to protect your contents from loss covered by this policy.

We’ll pay up to $5,000 for a reward payment you make to protect or recover your contents as long as we agree to it first. 

Cover for accidental loss caused by terrorism, so long as it’s not connected with nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons or contamination.

You’re covered for up to $5,000 for theft of your contents by paying guests at your house.

Covers your legal liability and defence costs, up to $1,000,000, for costs awarded against you under the Forest and Rural Fires Act 1977.

Up to $5,000 cover for legal liability costs associated with a hazardous substances emergency at your section.

Up to $1,000,000 cover for legal liability for accidental loss to the property of others and/or accidental bodily injury to any other person.

If all your contents are destroyed we’ll make a $5,000 advance payment within 48 hours of accepting your claim. Please note we will deduct this advance from the settlement of your claim.

If you’re on holiday in Australia your personal effects, cellphones, hearing aids, glasses and sports equipment are insured for accidental loss while you’re there and when you’re in transit. Cover is for up to 30 days from the time you leave New Zealand.  

We’ll pay up to $5,000 for gradual damage to your contents. This is hidden damage that happens over time and is caused by a leaking internal waste or water pipe installed at your home and at the point that pipe connects to a household appliance. 

Up to $30,000 cover for temporary accommodation costs if your home is damaged and can't be lived in. This includes the cost of moving contents, storage costs, and even boarding for your cats or dogs.

You’re insured for accidental loss to a set of hearing aids, prescription glasses and dentures.  A maximum limit of $5,000 applies to these items so remember to specify them if they’re worth more.

If your freezer or fridge breaks down, is accidentally turned off, or if there’s a power cut, we’ll cover the loss of frozen or perishable food up to a maximum of $3000. 

If someone uses your card without permission we’ll cover up to $1,000, provided the person isn’t related to you, you can’t recover the costs anywhere else and you didn’t breach terms and conditions of the card.  

Cover for damage caused by an earthquake, volcanic eruption, tsunami, hydrothermal activity or landslip. This is a ‘top up’ to cover provided by EQC.

If an item is part of a pair or set, like chairs or couches, and a matching replacement can’t be found then this covers replacement of the entire set. 

Optional extras

You can purchase this Optional Benefit for even more comprehensive insurance.

Cover up to $5,000 for accidental loss to your lifestyle block contents. This includes machinery and equipment, and stores and harvested product that you use mainly for your lifestyle block operations.

What we pay

Your contents will be covered for either Present Day Value or Nominated Replacement.

Repair or replacement of your contents to the same condition they were in just before the loss, think of it as similar to a second hand value. 

Examples of items covered for Present Day Value:

  • Clothing
  • Toiletries
  • Footwear
  • Food
  • Books
  • Linen

Repair or replacement of your contents to the same condition as when they were brand new.
These items are covered for replacement:

  • Furniture
  • Furnishings
  • Home appliances
  • Valuable items
  • Home computers and cellphones that are less than three years old, up to $5,000
  • Other items noted on your insurance certificate as Nominated Replacement

Other contents not listed are covered for Present Day Value.
