Top 3 Hot Works Advice Tips

Hot Work Warranty

For clients that undertake hot work (including flame or disc cutting, grinding or welding, soldering, using bitumen boilers, blow lamps, brazing, burning or open-flame work or using hot air guns)  FMG adds a term to the policy requiring steps be taken to mitigate the heightened fire risk involved.  This includes confining work to a designated area (i.e. a clear area well away from any cladding and moveable combustible materials) or using heat resistant shielding, restricting work timeframes, using a fire watcher while work is being undertaken, having automatic fire protection systems in place and a fire extinguisher in close proximity to the work, and conducting a post work inspection.

Training

Some hot work requires a higher level of skill and competency. Workers must have the appropriate level of training and skill for the work they are doing. Training can be completed and competency demonstrated through qualifications issued by registered training organisations (e.g. an ITO) or through the completion of standards offered by the National Qualifications Framework. Workers should not use equipment that they are not trained and certified for.

Managing the risk associated with hot work is a team effort. You and your employees should also be well trained on the use of firefighting equipment and emergency procedures.

Hot Work Permits

A hot work permit system should be used if hot work is conducted outside of a designed area or where the object being worked on or other combustible materials nearby cannot be moved and all the fire hazards associated with it removed.

To help you keep the steps required top of mind we've put together a Hot Work pack. Each pack contains an information sheet, 10 FMG hot work permits, a checklist and a sticker. Please note Hot Work packs are available for FMG’s clients only.
