Plan today. Protect tomorrow.
A major event can affect much more than buildings. Losing access, power, water, communications or somewhere for people to stay can quickly put unexpected pressure on your farm or rural business.
Knowing what you rely on, where the weak spots are and what you’ll do if something stops working can help you keep things moving and recover sooner.
Know what keeps you running
Think about the things your property or business couldn’t operate without.
- Access: If your usual route was blocked, could people, supplies and emergency services still get through?
- Power: What would stop working if the power was out for several days?
- Water: How long could you operate if pumps, storage or water supplies were disrupted?
- Critical infrastructure: Which buildings, machinery, systems or communications do you rely on most?
- Housing: If people couldn’t stay on the property, where would they go?
Have a Plan B
Once you know what matters most, think about what you can put in place now to reduce the impact.
That might mean having backup power, alternative water supplies, another way on or off the property, key contacts written down, essential supplies on hand, or making sure everyone knows what to do.
Check your insurance before you need it
Make sure your insurance still reflects your property, equipment and business today. Check that the things you depend on are included, your insured values are up-to- date and you understand your cover, excesses and any areas you’ve chosen to self-insure.
It’s also worth thinking beyond physical damage. Consider how you would manage lost income or additional costs while getting the farm or business back up and running. And if in doubt, talk to your FMG representative.
Keep your plan current
Properties, people and businesses change, so your plan should too. Review it regularly, particularly after a significant change, emergency or near miss, and make sure your team and family know where to find it.
If you’re unsure whether your insurance is right for your current situation, talk to your FMG representative.
