The lifestyle journey
Whatever stage of the lifestyle block journey you are at we have plenty of advice and information to help you progress. We’ve put together some tips from what we have learnt after many years as New Zealand’s leading rural insurer.
Starting out
Buying your first lifestyle block is a big undertaking. There's a lot of perks but there are a lot more things to think about than just owning a standard house.
Next steps
If you’re upgrading your lifestyle block, it’s always good to get a few tips from people who’ve ‘been there, done that’.
Getting serious
If you’re looking to move to a bigger operation there are a few things to be thinking about like infrastructure, consents and making sure the land is suitable.
Fires
Much of New Zealand is experiencing a hot, dry El Nino, which means an increase in fire risk. It’s important to be prepared for hot, dry and windy conditions to reduce the risk of fires starting and spreading.

Drought
This summer, New Zealand is in for El Nino weather conditions. Which typically means frequent westerly winds resulting in drought – particularly in northern and eastern regions.

Protecting your lifestyle
What's on your block?
Horses
Lameness, tendon and ligament injuries, ulcers and colic make up most of the claims from horse owners insured with FMG. We’ve worked with the experts to put together a few helpful tips on how to avoid common injury and illness in your horse.

Apiary
We know there’s a lot that goes into being an apiarist, including a bit of a risk. At FMG we want to make sure you know the common pitfalls so you can avoid any negative impact on your business due to an accident, loss, or theft.
